It’s been nearly 15 years since Sporty, Scary, Posh, Baby and Ginger took the world by storm with their debut single, Wannabe. The team behind the launch of the all-girl British pop band, The Spice Girls, is looking for new faces to form a band similar to the ’90s pop sensation. This time, the music label is only looking for girls from Asia.
The organisers call the hunt Project Lotus — a movement to find, train, groom, form and launch an international Pan-Asian girl band.
Manish Purwal, MD of the company in charge of selecting the finalists from India, says, “We will have online and offline auditions. The process will be documented as part of a four-part reality series.”
Up to 40 candidates will be shortlisted, out of which five girls from India will go to Hong Kong. The lead judge from India will be music composer
Shamir Tandon. “I’m looking for three qualities in the contestants: their vocal skills, the way they interact with each other, and whether they are presentable. They must be able to sing in English.”
Shamir says the reality series will be unlike any of the reality shows viewers are accustomed do. “There will be no voting or drama. The judges will decide the contestants based on their singing skills.”
